The return of quarterback Everett Golson at Notre Dame is getting off to a smashing start with a rushing and passing touchdown in the first quarter against the Rice Owls as the Fighting Irish hold a 14-7 lead at the time of publishing.
Golson missed all of last season for academic reasons, but the quarterback who started during their run to the BCS National Championship Game two seasons ago is back under center and ready to lead this team through a gauntlet of a schedule.
He scored the first touchdown of the season for the team from 11 yards out on this run right through the heart of the Rice defense on what looked like a designed quarterback run.
Golson looks much bigger and stronger than the last time we saw him on a football field and that coincides with the reports we’ve heard out of South Bend during the team’s spring practices and his cameo at the Elite 11 quarterback camp earlier this summer.
If Golson can recapture the magic he had two seasons ago, why couldn’t Notre Dame make things interesting and throw a wrench into our preseason projections for the four-team College Football Playoff? At least they could play spoiler with some of the teams on their schedule.
