The Nebraska Cornhuskers will get their season underway on Saturday when they welcome the FAU Owls to Lincoln Memorial Stadium. This game was supposed to be a battle between the Pelini brothers, Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini and former Nebraska defensive coordinator and FAU head coach Carl Pelini. FAU, however, fired Pelini because of the alleged use of marijuana and he was replaced by Charlie Partridge.

More from College Football

Nebraska is coming off of a 9-4 season and is looking to advance to the Big 10 Championship for the first. Their offense will be led by star running back Ameer Abdullah, who rushed for 1,690 yards and nine touchdowns on 281 carries and caught another 26 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. If Nebraska improves upon that 9-4 record, Abdullah could be a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender.

Pelini named Tommy Armstrong, Jr., who completed 68-of-131 passes for 966 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions filling in for an injured Taylor Martinez last season, as Nebraska’s starting quarterback. Armstrong beat out Ryker Fyfe and Johnny Stanton to claim the job.

FAU returns 15 starters, including quarterback Jaquez Johnson, who passed for 1,866 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for another 767 yards and and 10 touchdowns last season.
