The Virginia Cavaliers got off to a brutal start in their season opener Saturday afternoon.
Although the Cavaliers’ defense has been fantastic against the seventh-ranked UCLA Bruins, they fell way behind in the first half.
The Bruins have been completely shut out of the end zone but have scored three defensive touchdowns.
Ishmael Adams returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown and Randall Goforth returned a fumble 75 yards for a score to push the Cavaliers’ lead to 14-3 in the second quarter. Eric Kendricks’ 37-yard interception return made it 21-3.
That’s when Greyson Lambert, who threw both picks, was lifted for Matt Johns.
Johns has responded with two touchdown passes. The first was a 29-strike to Andre Levrone just before the half. The second came at the 7:33 mark in the third quarter when Johns found Darius Jennings for a 23-yard score.
