The Houston Texans released starting safety Chris Clemons as part of their pare down to the 53 man roster. Instantly it was rumored that former Houston Texan safety Danieal Manning would rejoin the team. Today the team made it official.

More from Houston Texans

Earlier in the off-season the Texans had released the veteran who had started all 35 games for the team until he broke his leg in 2013. Manning was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals who released him on Saturday as they trimmed to the 53 man size. Shortly thereafter whispers began that Manning would indeed return to Houston.

The holdup was the teams need to work Manning through a physical which according to Ian Rapoport was concluded this morning. Manning will likely be penciled in as the day one starter now that Clemons has been let go. Clemons was a free agent acquisition of the Texans this past March. He had spent his previous NFL seasons in Miami.

Manning was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft by the Chicago Bears and in 2011 signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans. A $20 million four year deal that came with $9 million in guarantees. In March of 2014 the Texans released him. The 32 year old safety’s new contract number have not been released yet. He is obviously entering the twilight of his career but the Texans believe and should know how much he has left at this stage of his career.
