Preseason All-Big Ten defensive and and All-American candidate for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Randy Gregory is doubtful to play in the team’s Week 2 game with a knee injury that forced his exit in the opening week win against Florida Atlantic.

According to Steven M. Sipple of the Lincoln Journal-Star, Pelini said “An old injury. Something that flared up. I would say he’s doubtful for this week. It’s a knee issue, Gregory underwent a minor procedure on his knee Sunday morning. We’re not looking to rush him back right now.”

Gregory is doubtful for this weekend’s game against McNeese State but is probably for the Week 3 game at Fresno State.

What the “minor procedure” was is unknown at this time but a minor arthroscopic knee procedure is still something to be concerned about when it involves your best defender and arguably the most important piece to winning a conference title.

The Nebraska defense didn’t need Gregory to defeat Florida Atlantic and they should be just fine to go without him this week and expect them to play it safe with his availability for the Fresno State game as they can ill afford a setback before Big Ten conference play begins.

Nebraska hosts Miami in Week 4 in a game that the Huskers would love to have Gregory back in time for. Gregory led the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks last year and is on the short list of the top pass-rushers in college football and a potential top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Huskers defeated Florida Atlantic 55-7 in Week 1 with Ameer Abdullah rushing for a career-high 232 yards and one touchdown.
