If Ray Allen decides to return for his 19th NBA season, there will be suitors abound. The latest team to enter openly the competition for his three-point shooting, lane penetrating talents? The Washington Wizards.

More from NBA

CSN Washington Wizards Insider J. Michael writes, “The team contacted the 39-year-old shooting guard early in the free agent process to gauge his interest in signing, CSNwashington.com has confirmed with two people with knowledge of the situation Tuesday.”

The signing makes sense for a few reasons. One is Paul Pierce, who signed with the Wizards this offseason and played with Allen on the championship Boston Celtics.

The shooting guard may have averaged a career low 9.6 points per game with the Miami Heat last season before becoming a free agent, but the Wizards have a great need for another sharp shooter. The departure of Trevor Ariza meant they’re going to have harder time stretching the floor.

Combine Allen with Bradley Beal and the Wizards’ perimeter becomes deadly.

Allen will probably receive different offers with different advantages. In Cleveland, he’ll have the best opportunity for an NBA Championship birth. In San Antonio, he’ll have a good chance but less of a sure thing due to a more competitive Western Conference. The Clippers are in the mix, too.

Allen taking up residence in the District is possible not probable.

J. Michael writes, “Allen coming to D.C. is a long shot at best, and the Wizards anticipate having the final roster spot open when the regular season opens to give them flexibility to make a move in season.  They’re not required to have 15 players under contract.”
