New York Yankees will add Derek Jeter patches to uniforms for final two weeks of 2014 season (Photo)

We may have finally reached the point where we are taking this Derek Jeter farewell tour just a bit too far.

That is not to diminish the significance of Jeter’s career or the importance of taking the opportunity to honor him in his final big league season. One of the greatest players and greatest Yankees of all time deserves each standing ovation he gets. To see him in his final season is no small thing, and spectators should honor the occasion as such.
You could even argue that he deserves the going away presents from the different teams around baseball, though that really depends on the nature of each gift.
The moment when things go too far is the moment when the team adds commemorative patches to their caps and jerseys for the final two weeks of the season. Those patches are typically for honoring the great figures of any franchise after they have passed away. A patch for Jeter just feels out of place.

That is a very nice looking patch, but then you remember that Jeter himself will be wearing a jersey with that patch on it. That has to be seen as odd, right?
