The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Ohio State Buckeyes have agreed to a home-and-home football series to take place during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the Associated Press reports. These will take the place of the Michigan games on the Notre Dame schedule.

Notre Dame opted out of their rivalry series with Michigan effective after this season.

Ohio State last played Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl after the 2005 season, with the Buckeyes winning 34-20. These two teams have not met in a regular season matchup since 1996. They have also only met four times during the regular season, whereas the Irish and Michigan will have played 42 times after this Saturday.

That is about to change. Ohio State will host the first game of this series on September 3, 2022. Notre Dame hosts the second game on September 23, 2023.

This continues a trend for the Buckeyes of scheduling tough non-conference opponents. They get Virginia Tech this year and next year, followed by Oklahoma in 2016 and 2017. They get TCU in 2018 and 2019. They selected Oregon for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Then it gets even tougher. They now have Notre Dame and Texas on the docket for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Notre Dame, aside from their yearly games with USC and Stanford, have Texas coming up in 2015 and 2016. The Irish also agreed to a series with Georgia in 2017 and 2019. The only problem with that is they already have the Longhorns scheduled again in 2019 and 2020. They don’t want to have to go to Austin and Athens in the same season, so the Irish are trying to push back the final two games of their four game contract with Texas.

With the playoff era now upon us in college football, some teams have taken matters into their own hands as far as tough out of conference schedules. If the Big 12(10) is any indication, you can’t always rely on your conference schedule to bring the tough games that you need on your resume`.
