Bob Knight hits cow with SUV while on fishing trip in Wyoming

We have all seen Bob Knight figuratively have a cow several times during his illustrious coaching career in which he won 902 games, which is now third all time in Division I behind Jim Boeheim with 943, and Mike Krzyzewski with 983. On a dark highway in Northern Wyoming on August 22nd, he literally had a cow. Planted firmly into the grill of his 2012 Ford Expedition.

Though the airbag deployed, the 73-year-old Hall of Fame coach was not hurt in the accident that occurred on Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. The car was totaled in the accident. Knight ran into the cow in the dusk at about 8:45 pm local time. He said that he never saw the wandering animal.

The cow was one of several wandering in an open range area in which the road runs through. Coach Knight was traveling alone after a fishing trip near Thermopolis in central Wyoming.

Knight was as well-known for his antics on and off the court as he was for his win total and three national championships. He stepped away from coaching in 2008, and has since done analysis and commentary for ESPN.

He began his coaching career at the age of 24 with Army in 1963. After 102 wins there, he was hired at Indiana prior to the 1971 season. He enjoyed most of his success at Indiana, winning 662 games in 29 years. That is also where his temper sometimes got him in trouble.

He threw a chair across the basketball court during one of his infamous tirades while coaching at Indiana. He also allegedly choked Neil Reed during a 1997 practice. Knight was dismissed from Indiana in September of 2000 after breaking the zero tolerance policy that Indiana president Myles Brand had placed on him.

After a year off, Knight accepted the job at Texas Tech, and helped the program become relevant in basketball. He left the Red Raiders in the hands of his son Pat during the 2008 season. He does not plan on coaching again.
