On Thursday a letter from Georgia Bulldogs’ head coach Mark Richt to a trash-talking Clemson Tigers fan surfaced on Deadspin. Richt allegedly was bragging about routing Clemson 45-21, this after an entire offseason of trash-talking directed at him by Clemson fans.

There’s just one large problem with Deadspin’s accounting of what happened following the game last Saturday — it’s a fake letter.

At least according to Richt, who took to Twitter on Thursday to deny anything of that nature was sent by him.

Richt’s alleged letter to “Travis,” who had sent him a letter trash-talking Todd Gurley and the famed hedges at Sanford Stadium, was apparently sent from Augusta, GA and went like this:

“There was a reason Georgia was ranked ahead of Clemson in the Pre-Season polls; and I’m sure we showed that last night. P.S. – Todd told me he didn’t have a good game last night.”

You know, because head football coaches have nothing better to do after a big win than sit down, pen a letter to an opposing fan, drive 95 miles to Augusta and have the letter mailed from there.

At least Richt nipped a ridiculous story in the bud as soon as possible. It’s truly amazing the depths some fans will sink to in order to get their 15 minutes of fame.
