Final Score: Virginia upsets number 21 Louisville at home 23-21

The Virginia Cavaliers knocked off a nationally ranked team for the first time since November of 2011 when they beat number 23 Florida State today. They took out number 21 Louisville by the score of 23-21

The Cardinals took the opening kickoff in Charlottesville, and marched right down the field for a touchdown.

Then the fabled Virginia defense stepped up. They disrupted the Louisville line and receivers for the rest of the game, and forced Will Gardner into low percentage passes all day. He finished just 14-34 with 164 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions

It was a comedy of errors in the first half for both teams. Each turned it over three times in the first half. All of the turnovers made it just about impossible for either of them to establish an offensive rhythm.

Greyson Lambert led Virginia on a 10 play drive to open the second half, and finished it off with a ten yard touchdown run, putting Virginia up 17-7.

Reggie Bonafon entered the game for Gardner off and on in the second half for the Cardinals, and led them on a eight play, 56 yard drive that culminated in a touchdown to pull Louisville within six with 13 minutes remaining.

After a controversial roughing the passer penalty negated another Gardner interception, Louisville instead got a touchdown on that drive to take a one point lead with seven minutes remaining.

Virginia turned the tides for good with five minutes remaining when Kelvin Rainey recovered a muffed punt on the Louisville 25 yard line. That turned into a career long 42 yard field goal for Ian Frye, his third of the afternoon.

That gave the Cavaliers the lead for good, as the defense made Louisville punt from their own end zone, and running back Kevin Parks, who was held to just 66 yards on 22 carries, picked up the game winning first down.
