The Arizona Diamonbacks have suffered through a dreadful season, but got good news when an MRI on rookie outfielder David Peralta’s back revealed no structural damage on Saturday.

More from Arizona Diamondbacks

Peralta has not played since September 5, but has been a nice surprise for Arizona, hitting seven home runs and slashing .293/.326/.461 in 304 at bats, all after June 1. Peralta was signed by the Diamondbacks to a minor-league deal in June 2013, and originally in baseball as a pitcher, signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004. The left-handed hitting Peralta has played all three outfield spots this season for Arizona, even though he wasn’t called up until June, when starting center fielder A.J. Pollock broke his hand. Pollock has since returned, and Peralta is apparently hoping to return to action this season, possibly by September 18.

The 27-year old Perlata is a native of Venezuela, and will be under the Diamondbacks control until at least 2020, as he is pre-arbitration eligible.
