Quarterback Carson Palmer won’t play Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Palmer tested his ailing right shoulder and it did not go well.

That means Drew Stanton will start for Arizona. Stanton hasn’t started—or played in—a regular season game since Dec. 19, 2010, when he was 23-for-37 for 252 yards and a touchdown while leading the Detroit Lions to a 23-20 win at Tampa Bay.

Stanton is in his second season as Palmer’s backup in Arizona, but did not take a snap in a regular-season game with the Lions in 2011, the Indianapolis Colts in 2012 or the Cardinals last season.

Stanton played in three preseason games this summer, going 27-for-38 for 341 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

He has made four career starts, all with the Lions in 2009-10. The team was 2-2 in those games. For his career, he has completed 104-of-187 passes (55.6 percent) for 1,158 yards, with five touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Stanton was a second-round pick of the Lions out of Michigan State in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Palmer led Arizona to a come-from-behind 18-17 win over the San Diego Chargers on Monday night, throwing two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, including a 13-yarder to John Brown with 2:25 remaining. He was 24-for-37 for 304 yards and two scores and was sacked twice.
