If you are a team in the American League Wild Card race and you are not called the Kansas City Royals, then you did not win a baseball game on Monday night.

The Oakland Athletics were idle and remain in the top Wild Card spot. The Royals won in dramatic walk-off fashion over the Chicago White Sox. Every other team under consideration here lost on Monday, giving up a full game to the Royals and making things that much harder on themselves.

Start with the Seattle Mariners, who dropped their third straight game with an ugly loss against the Los Angeles Angels (who clinched a playoff spot). Having division games stacked up late in the season can be a golden opportunity, but as the Mariners are learning, it can also be a way to fall quickly in the standings.

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees both lost division games: Toronto lost to the division leading Baltimore Orioles while the Yankees lost a heart-breaker to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Finally, the Cleveland Indians had arguably the most disappointing loss of all, as they could not beat the lowly Houston Astros. Though to be fair, the Astros might not be the doormat they once were.

With all of that action, here is where things stand for the American League Wild Card.

  1. Oakland Athletics – 83-66, +1.0 WCGB
  2. Kansas City Royals – 82-67, — WCGB
  3. Seattle Mariners – 80-69, 2.0 WCGB
  4. Toronto Blue Jays – 77-72, 5.0 WCGB
  5. New York Yankees – 76-73, 6.0 WCGB
  6. Cleveland Indians – 76-73, 6.0 WCGB
