With three weeks of college football in the books, most teams are now starting to kick off their conference schedule.  With a handful of non-conference matchups under their belts, the top teams in the nation now must start to bear down.  For the Heisman hopefuls, it is in conference play that the award is won and lost.

Once again taking a look at the Heisman Pundit Straw Poll, considered to be the gold standard in determining the Heisman race, some very familiar names continue to show up.

Here’s how things sit after week 3:

The HeismanPundit.com Heisman Straw Poll, 9/16/2014

Total Points (with first place votes in parentheses)

1. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon — 23 (6)

2. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia — 16 (3)

3. Kenny Hill, QB, Texas A&M — 10 (1)

4. Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State — 7

5. Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama— 3

6. Taysom Hill, QB, BYU  — 1

Marcus Mariota continues to claim the top stop in the Straw Poll.  Fresh off landing his third Sports Illustrated cover, Mariota continues to breeze through the early portion of his schedule.  The Oregon Ducks now get to work on getting Mariota some separation with some conference wins in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.

Todd Gurley also continues to impress for Georgia.  The running back looks like a clear-cut first round pick, and he has breezed through the competition.

Somewhat interesting, last year’s Heisman winner, Jameis Winston, seems to have fallen by the wayside.  Having done nothing wrong, he has also failed to do much of anything spectacular either.

At any rate, now is the point in the season that the Heisman starts to take shape.  Let’s so how it unfolds from here on out.
