Miami Marlins confirm Giancarlo Stanton to miss remainder of the season after all

Well, there was hope there for a moment Miami Marlins fans would get to see one more Giancarlo Stanton at bat this season. The team had ordered protective batting helmets just in case team doctors cleared the outfielder to get an at bat or two before the end of the 2014 season, following Stanton being hit in the face by a pitch last week. To be honest, as much as the Marlins seemed to want to get Stanton back in the batter’s box, even just one more time this season, it’s probably better for both Stanton and the team to take it easy and just come back at 100 percent in 2015. He’s simply too valuable to take any sort of chances with, particularly for some meaningless at bats at the end of a lost season. Marlins general manager Dan Jennings was hoping for a heartfelt comeback moment with Stanton this season, but it’s not going to happen.

Even with missing the rest of the year, Stanton has a good case for the National League MVP. He finishes the year with 37 home runs, slashed .288/.395/.555 and was worth 6.0 fWAR this season, among the best in the league.
