When you have a player talented as Chandler Parsons on a very team friendly contract, it’s not very often that you let them out of that deal.

However, that’s exactly what the Houston Rockets did this offseason with Chandler Parsons, opting to let him become a restricted free agent instead of paying him his $965,000 salary. Why would they make such a move? It was suggested the Houston Rockets were attempting to use restricted free agency to their advantage, however that doesn’t appear to be the case.

According to Clutch Fans, Chandler Parsons was let out of his contract because of Dwight Howard?

"As I’ve been told, Howard’s agent Dan Fegan did not want Dwight in Houston, preferring instead to steer him to another team. Reportedly, that team was Dallas as the agent has a relationship and comfort level with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Dwight preferred Houston. To seal the deal for the premier free agent, Fegan provided the Rockets a list of needs/demands to bring him here and one of them was to let Chandler Parsons, who also was represented by Fegan, out of his contract this summer rather than wait until 2015."

As strange as it sounds, it’s something that makes complete sense. Fegan obviously didn’t want his client (Parsons) playing for such a small contract and in effort to get Dwight Howard to sign with the Houston Rockets, they caved to Fegan’s demands.

It’s unlikely this is the first time such a scenario has unfolded around the NBA, though having two high profile players like Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons behind it may be a first.

Parsons of course signed a three-year, $46 million dollar with the Dallas Mavericks.
