The Miami Marlins and the baseball world in general received some good news this week: young ace Jose Fernandez could resume throwing soon as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.

If Fernandez is able to start the initial steps of a throwing program, then it would set him up to return roughly around next year’s All-Star break.

Per Joe Frisaro of MLB.com:

"Fernandez underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on May 16, and his recovery is expected to be around 14 months. Miami manager Mike Redmond said he didn’t have an exact timeline of the hard-throwing right-hander’s return, but those around the team expect it to be around the 2015 All-Star Game.“Jose is out seeing Dr. ElAttrache to see if he will be cleared to start his throwing program on Oct. 1,” Redmond said Thursday afternoon. “That’s exciting news. We’ll see what the outcome of that is.”"

Still just 22 years old, Fernandez has already thrilled fans with his electric stuff and his outgoing personality to match. He is one of the rising stars of the game, so the sooner he is back the better.

As for the Marlins, they were able to hang around the fringes of the playoff race this year without Fernandez. If they can hang on until his return next season, they could be a very intriguing team in the National League.
