Running back LaMichael James was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 8, but it might not be too much before he has a new job.

More from Miami Dolphins

James worked out with the Miami Dolphins recently and the two parties have a “mutual interest,” according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

"There remains mutual interest between the Dolphins and former Oregon star running back LaMichael James, a 2012 second-round pick who requested his release from the 49ers last week because he wants a more substantial role. James is expected to take the weekend to consider his options. He worked out for the Dolphins on Tuesday."

The Dolphins certainly make a lot of sense as a possible destination for James. With starting running back Knowshon Moreno out for the next 4-8 weeks because of a dislocated elbow, Miami is awfully thin at the running back position. The team signed the unimpressive Daniel Thomas back to the roster earlier this week, which indicates just how weak Miami is in the backfield.

James’ short NFL career hasn’t been a rousing success, but this is someone who was dominant at the collegiate level with Oregon and is only two years removed from being a second-round pick. At the very least, James is better than Thomas.

James has 41 carries for 185 yards for his career.
