The Miami Dolphins host the 0-2 Kansas City Chiefs this weekend at Sun Life Stadium as the team hopes to win it’s second home game of the season in as many tries.

If they are going to win on Sunday, the Dolphins will need a lot better production from their special teams unit that simply fell apart against the division rival Buffalo Bills last Sunday.

In the game against Buffalo, the Dolphins allowed a blocked punt, muffed another punt, and allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown. Needless to say, the special teams unit put the Dolphins in a hole time and time again last Sunday, and they need to fix it moving forward.

“There was no magical double criss-cross, jump-over schemes where they freed somebody up,” head coach Joe Philbin told the Miami Herald. “It was a lot of things that looked like were in the control of the kicking team. So really the point we’ve been emphasizing is we have good schemes. It didn’t feel like we got out-schemed on those particular mishaps, so to speak, but we are clear that we have to execute better.”

Jarvis Landry, the Dolphins rookie kick returner that muffed the punt last week, noted that the Dolphins have been stressing special teams play all week.

“It’s always intense, always has been,” Landry told the Herald. “This week, it was a little more attention to detail, and fundamental, assignment-wise.”

If the Dolphins can fix their issues on special teams, they could find themselves in the thick of the AFC East race by season’s end.
