Pittsburgh Pirates’ catcher Russell Martin might have just buried the Milwaukee Brewers for good this season.

Milwaukee entered this weekend series 3.0 games back of Pittsburgh for the second Wild Card spot in the National League. With a little over a week left in the big league season, the Brewers likely needed to sweep Pittsburgh to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Things looked promising from the Brewers’ perspective for much of this game. They carried a 2-0 lead into the 8th inning and just needed their bullpen to make that lead stand to get a huge series opening win, potentially their biggest win of the year.

That is where Martin came into the picture. He had other plans, much to the joy of the Pirates’ faithful, as he delivered a dramatic go-ahead home run to center field.

Martin has been one of the best players on the Pirates in 2014. One could even say that he has been their MVP for stretches of this season. He showed why he means so much to this team with this moment on Friday.

For the second season in a row, there is something happening in Pittsburgh as the playoffs approach.
