With the San Francisco 49ers looking like they were in position for an easy victory over a depleted Chicago Bears’ team last Sunday night, defensive lineman Quinton Dial absolutely blasted quarterback Jay Cutler after he launched a deep pass.

Dial was called for roughing the passer, a penalty that keyed an eventual Chicago touchdown. That scoring drive, in turn, helped get things rolling for the Bears to come all the way back and win 28-20.

As if the significance of that hit wasn’t enough in the heat of the moment, now it’s going to cost Dial in the pocket book as well. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that Fial was fined $16,537 for the hit:

"Defensive tackle Quinton Dial was called for a costly roughing-the-passer penalty in the 49ers’ loss Sunday night to the Chicago Bears. The penalty helped set up a Bears touchdown before the half. And it was costly in another way, too. Dial was fined $16,537, the NFL announced on Friday."

The penalty and fine both come as a result of the fact that Dial was deemed to lead with the crown of his helmet as he hit Cutler straight in the chest. If momentum is your thing, then it was a key play as it seemed to fire up Cutler and the Bears.

Dial and the 49ers will try to bounce back from that ugly loss against the Arizona Cardinals this weekend.
