Virginia took the opening kickoff, and three plays later, they were in the end zone. Much to the chagrin of the bewildered BYU fans. The Cougar defense settled down after the first drive and made Virginia work for the rest of their points.

That said, the Virginia defense made life difficult for the BYU offense and dual threat quarterback Taysom Hill. The Cougars had just 60 rushing yards in the first half.

The second half was a different story. The BYU offensive line took over against the Virginia defensive line in the third quarter and created more running lanes for hill and running back Jamaal Williams.

Hill ended up with 187 yards passing and 72 yards rushing, while account for three Cougar touchdowns.

Though the Virginia defense has gained notoriety for it’s work against UCLA and Louisville, it was BYU’s defense that stifled the Cavaliers in the third quarter.

The Virginia offense didn’t miss a beat when quarterback Grayson Lambert was forced to leave the game late in the third quarter. Backup Matt Johns led the a scoring drive early in the f0urth quarter, and did a good job of taking what the defense gave him.

No matter what Johns did though, the Cavaliers just could not get over the hump, thanks to plays like this one immediately after Virginia cut the lead to 34-26.

BYU welcomes the Utah State Aggies to town on Friday night for a rivalry game as they try to stay in the top 25.
