San Francisco Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy put his name in the team history books on Sunday afternoon against the San Francisco Giants. With five strikeouts in the game, it gave him 201 on the season.

Okay, big deal, right? 200 strikeouts is not all that common anymore, but someone breaks that mark nearly every year.

Unless you play for the San Diego Padres. Kennedy became just the fourth pitcher and sixth season to pass that landmark in team history.

While he cannot eclipse the franchise record of 257 set by Kevin Brown in his only season with the team in 1998, he can still join the annals of team history.

Only Brown’s 257, Jake Peavy‘s 240 in 2007, Clay Kirby‘s 231 in 1971, Peavy’s 216 in 2005, and Peavy’s 215 in 2006 are ahead of Kennedy in team history.

Moreover, teammate Tyson Ross, who has 195 strikeouts this season, could make Kennedy and Ross the first duo to accomplish that in the same season in team history. However, there is no guarantee that Ross will be able to make another start this year. He has some soreness in his forearm, and since the Padres have nothing to play for, it seems likely that they will not risk subjecting him to further injury.

Kennedy is set to take the mound once more this year. It will be against the San Francisco Giants again in San Francisco on either Friday or Saturday.

While Kennedy striking out 14 in his final start is unlikely since his career high is 12, he will still secure a place in team history.
