The Oakland Athletics desperately needed to win on Sunday. They needed to match the win from the Kansas City Royals and, perhaps more importantly, they needed to make sure they did not lose a series at home to the lowly Houston Astros.

There were tense times at the Oakland Coliseum, then, as the game went to extra innings with the score tied at 6-6. Thankfully for the A’s, they had the right man up in the right spot as Josh Donaldson came up to bat.

To the thrill of his teammates and the fans in attendance, Donaldson blasted a deep walk-off home run to center field as the A’s won by a final score of 8-6. This win kept them 0.5 games in front of the Royals for the top Wild Card spot and kept the Seattle Mariners 1.5 games out of the playoffs.

For an Oakland team that has sputtered as of late, this might be just the shot in the arm they needed as they embark on the final week of the regular season.
