New Orleans Saints linebacker Curtis Lofton told ESPN Sunday morning that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s actions show a lack of accountability and accused the commissioner of employing a double standard.

"“I think you can’t handle situations one way, but then when you are involved in a situation do the complete opposite,” Lofton told ESPN’s Josina Anderson (h/t CBSSports.com). “I think that there’s no accountability in that something needs to change.”"

Lofton related Goodell’s actions in the recent firestorm of domestic violence incidents and compared it to how he handled the Saints’ bounty scandal in 2012.

At the time, Goodell said “ignorance was not an excuse” when he handed down penalties that included a season-long suspension for head coach Sean Payton.

"“One man has all the power and there’s no checks and balance,” Lofton said. “So there needs to be a change and it definitely needs to start with that. I think as players it’s frustrating and you’re upset about it because whenever a guy messes up there are consequences and all we preach about is protecting the shield, protecting the shield.“But when the commissioner doesn’t protect the shield, what comes of it? What consequences does he face and is he having to deal with? There hasn’t been anything. So I think it’s kind of a double standard.”"
