Andrelton Simmons is as good of a defensive shortstop as the MLB has ever seen statistically. Simmons is like a vacuum and it seems that any ball that goes near him will end up in his glove. Simmons led all defensive players by far last season with 41 runs saved. Let that statistic settle in for a minute. Simmons saved 41 defensive runs for his team last season.

More from Atlanta Braves

Although the Braves won’t make the playoffs this season, Simmons’ defense has remained a staple for them. Simmons is on pace to win the gold glove award again, and if he keeps playing defense like he has so far in his career, don’t expect that to change any time soon. Simmons is only 24-years-old, and with his gifted defensive ability, the Braves won’t want to get rid of him anytime soon.

Simmons has received comparisons to the great Ozzie Smith and to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Smith you must be doing something right. Amidst a down season for the Braves, Andrelton Simmons has given them something to smile about.

Simmons was up to his usual tricks tonight against the Pirates. Watch here as Simmons makes an athletic, diving catch to prevent a hit.
