The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to figure something out with their center depth, but they’re similarly trying to figure something out with forward Tristan Thompson.

Cleveland may have a solution to their center problem in Thompson but another problem persists with their young player and it has everything to do with his contract. According to Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal, Thompson is expected to ask for at least $40 million on his new contract, but he could play his way into more dollars this season.

"He will ask for the type of money previously given to Derrick Favors (four years, $49 million) and Larry Sanders (four years, $44 million). What will hurt Thompson’s case, however, is the Greg Monroe saga. Monroe, by all accounts a better player than Thompson, was forced to sign a one-year qualifying offer with the Pistons after failing to reach agreement on a long-term contract with anyone this summer. He will now be an unrestricted free agent next summer."

Thompson is a star int he making and his relationship and work habit with LeBron James will only further his potential value. There was talk of trading Thompson this season but now that he appears to be sliding into a role at center, the liklihood that a contract is talked about this season is on the rise.

Of course, that doesn’t mean the Cavs will shell out cash to keep what amounts to be an undersized center, but Thompson is special and may be someone the Cavaliers want to watch grow before they jettison him in a trade.
