Jermaine O’Neal undecided if he will play next season

After 18 years in the NBA, Golden State Warriors center Jermaine O’Neal may be calling it quits. Or not. Well, he doesn’t even know.

According to Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle, Warriors general manager Bob Myers is trying to get to the bottom of it.

In his only season in Golden State, O’Neal played in 44 games averaging 7.9 points on 50.4 percent shooting, 5.5 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per contest.

For the Warriors, they would lose a valuable veteran if O’Neal decides to hang them up. With Andrew Bogut’s constant injury concerns, and Festus Ezeli missing last season, O’Neal became a key part of solidifying the front court.

It’s no secret that O’Neal’s best days are behind him, but he showed last season that he can still contribute at a high level. He had some especially big games for the Warriors last season, including an 11-point, 8-rebound showing in December to help lift the Warriors over the Toronto Raptors.

When he has games like that, where he is shooting nearly 60 percent from the field and seems to be having it going from the post, it is a charming reminder of the great player he used to be. Those flashes are enough to root for him to stay in the NBA.
