The Dallas Cowboys and their legion of fans were beyond excited when the team selected former LSU standout cornerback Morris Claiborne with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Two years later, the former SEC defensive player of the year has simply not lived up to his expectations, but the Cowboys refuse to give up on him just yet.

“You can’t deny his ability to play a ball,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan and transcribed by Dallas Morning News. “He’s got skills relative to playing the ball, helping make turnovers. He’s just got too much skill out there to not continue persistently and diligently to get him to where he can work within the defense and make those kinds of plays for us.

Even though Claiborne has been torched multiple times this season, his athleticism is evident to anyone that knows the position. At this point, it is a matter of the coaches honing that athleticism and giving Clairborne the tools necessary to become the great player the Cowboys expected back when they drafted him in 2012.

“We’re not giving up on him at all,” Jones continued. “Is he what we had hoped for at this point when we drafted him with the sixth pick, gave up a pick to go up to the sixth pick to get him? No. But he’s going to be a good player.”

If those comments don’t light a fire under Clairborne to perform better throughout the rest of the season then nothing will. The truth is, if Claiborne doesn’t improve soon, the Cowboys will ultimately have to give up on him and move on.
