Usain Bolt has stated his intentions to break his own world records next season, in particular going under the 19 second barrier in the 200 metres. Bolt has been the star of athletics for the last 8 years, have catapulted in worldwide attention with his performances at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He followed on this success with the World Championships in Berlin in 2009, the setting for both his 100 metre and 200 metre world record.

Whilst the 28-year-old acknowledges that the 100 metres is the flagship event of most athletics meets, he says that the 200 metres is more suited to his running style. The current world record, held by Bolt, stands at 19.19 seconds, but his second best 200 metre time is 19.30, so there is a lot of improvement required if Bolt is to go sub-19.

From Aljazeera.com:

"“Everybody wants to see the 100m go but the 200m is for me… The 200m is my personal focus. One of my biggest goals is to try to run sub-19, pushing the barrier a little bit will be great for me.” – Bolt"

Nevertheless, Bolt is still keen to continue running the 100 metres. His record currently stands at 9.58 seconds, a time no other sprinter has come close to. Bolt himself hasn’t gone below 9.76 since the London Olympics in 2012, where he ran 9.63.

Injuries have stopped him gaining any real momentum in 2014, but his desire to get back to his best is clear:

"“If I can get a perfect season where I’m working well, without any injuries, with no time off, I’ll definitely have the chance to break the 100m world record.” – Bolt"

Bolt also took time to give his view on the six positive doping tests by Jamaican athletes in recent years. He stuck by his colleagues, offering a somewhat controversial stance, suggesting that mistakes were made but “there weren’t any serious drugs.” Going on to defend his fellow athletes by claiming there was no intent to cheat. It is certainly an opinion that not everyone shares, but it is nice to see a top athlete refusing to talk ill of his colleagues.
