If you’re a fan of a Western Conference team and you’re not nervous about the Colorado Avalanche, you need to re-think that.

  • As if the veteran force amassed in Colorado isn’t enough, 2013 first overall draft pick Nathan MacKinnon seems to only be getting better. During tonight’s preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens, MacKinnon has been on the assist for both goals scored by the Avs- for someone who wants to prove to the hockey community that he’s here to stay, holding your own against a team with P.K. Subban on the ice is a nice way to do it.

According to New York Islanders captain John Tavares, who has been working out with MacKinnon all summer, the kid- who just turned nineteen this summer –I know this because he tweeted “I am nineteen” and it made me feel horrendously old– has gotten “huge”. He’s filled out his fix-foot frame, reminding all of us that it is possible to come off a 63-point season even stronger than before.

That’s right. Last year, MacKinnon had 63 points. He almost hit thirty goals AS A FIRST-YEAR ROOKIE.

With the Colorado-Montreal game still tied up at two apiece at the end of the second period, it’s hard to believe that a nineteen-year-old can do much better than two points in a predominantly-starter-filled pre-season game.

    Wanna bet he does better?
