Over the last few months its become clear that Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong isn’t just paying lip service to the “5 core values” he espoused upon his hire in Austin, Texas.

More from NFL

Since arriving on campus he’s dismissed nine players and suspended three others, all as a result of increased drug testing and personal responsibility failures.

Apparently that no-nonsense approach has gotten the attention of the NFL, who according to a report by Chip Brown (subscription required), will meet with Strong in the coming weeks to learn more about his “5 core values.”

The five core values for Strong are pretty simple things: honesty, treat women with respect, no drugs, no stealing and no guns.

However, both college and NFL football players have failed to be able to live up to those values.

In the wake of the Ray Rice video release and other domestic violence cases coming down the pipeline, the NFL has taken a huge hit in public confidence. Reaching out to Strong, who hasn’t hesitated to dismiss anyone from his team for violation of those values, is a smart move to help with the public image and the internal culture issue at hand.

What remains to be seen is if putting those type of values at the front of the NFL will work to change perceptions, or if it will be about the actions taken by NFL executives and the players themselves that will matter most.
