Jay Gruden calls Redskins’ performance against the Giants ‘abysmal’
Last night new Washington head coach Jay Gruden got his first taste of what it feels like to get absolutely blown out in the NFL. His newly appointed quarterback Kirk Cousins threw four interceptions and his defense was taken to task by Eli Manning, who until this, game looked to be on a heavy decline in his career.

Manning threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns, as well as rushing for a touchdown in the red zone. The Giants disrespected the Washington secondary, and after the game, Gruden had some harsh choice words for his floundering team, as quoted by the Washington Post.
"“They came in, they were better prepared, their coaches had them ready to play. We didn’t have our guys ready to play. They outplayed us, in every phase, offense, defense, special teams, third down, they were tremendous offensively, we were abysmal offensively and defensively, and it showed. We turned the ball over six times, it was a dominating performance by them, and congratulations.”"
Gruden also didn’t hesitate to call out his quarterback on his horrific performance Thursday night. Here was his quote when asked about the interceptions thrown by Cousins:
"“Obviously, when you get down like that, you start trying to force some balls. He was trying to create a spark offensively, there was no spark there, and he just forced a few throws. Poor play calls, poor play design, forced throws, poor protection, good defense.”"
It was obvious to anyone who watched that game that Cousins’ interceptions were caused by bad decision making and trying to force throws when there simply was nothing there. That is something we saw from Cousins at Michigan State from time to time as well.
However, Gruden says he never considered pulling Cousins, and with Robert Griffin in a cast, he may be in a heap of trouble if Cousins continues to perform like he did last night.
