The Atlanta Braves struck out 1,369 times as a team during the 2014 season. It felt like 500,000, and with the team still reeling from its second-half collapse and failure to make the playoffs, Atlanta’s hitting coach stepped down.

Greg Walker announced his resignation on Tuesday.

It sounds like Walker might have made this move in the midst of rumblings that he was going to be fired anyway.

Based on the way that is worded, it sounds like it was a foregone conclusion that Fredi was going to throw Walker under the bus in that meeting and get him canned.

Baseball writers have been fascinated with the Braves’ offense for the last number of seasons, even calling it a “science experiment.” At issue was the fact that the Braves had so many guys who could hit for power but were strikeout prone. Some of those hitters are genuinely talented (Freddie Freeman, Justin Upton) and some are not (B.J. Upton, Dan Uggla).

None of them produced consistently this season under Walker’s watch, and now the Braves will look for a new hitting coach.
