The relationship between the Detroit Pistons and big man Greg Monroe grew sour fast. Monroe wound up signing his qualifying offer in order to become an unrestricted free agent in 2015 and many believe there is no chance he will return to the Pistons.

That won’t stop the Pistons from trying to re-sign Monroe to a long-term deal.

“He’s not just a good player, he’s a great player,” Gores said via Vince Ellis of The Detroit Free Press. “We’re committed to Greg and he’s on our team now and we want Greg to be onboard for a long time and I think we’ll have a good enough season where we’ll attempt to do that with Greg.”

The Pistons tried to sign Monroe earlier this offseason but he ultimately decided against it.

“We talked to his representatives,” Gores said. “I thought it was important to do that. We let him know how much we respected Greg – both as a person and as a player.

“We kind of put out our case on the table, but ultimately it’s Greg’s choice. He’s got a long future so we’ll find a way to be together in that future.”

Monroe put up 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 65.7% from the free throw line last season. Monroe was selected by the Pistons with seventh-overall pick in the first round of the 2010 draft. Thus far in his career, he has put up 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 50.8% from the floor and 67.8% from the foul line.
