Just one day after the New Jersey Devils released veteran defenseman Mike Komisarek from his PTO contract, they have cut two more of the veterans invited to training camp.

They cut their second and final veteran defenseman invitee and one of the remaining forwards, as Tomas Kaberle and Ruslan Fedotenko are headed home. Scott Gomez, Jordin Tootoo, and Ryan Carter are still skating around without inked contracts, waiting for the season to begin and their fate to be determined.

  • Fedotenko, who has played in the league for over a decade, will simply head back to Russia. He was attending the Devils’ camp on a tryout basis, but is ultimately signed by HC Donbass of the Kontinental Hockey League overseas. He has played for them for one and a half seasons prior to this year, as he signed with them in the lockout interim during the 2012-2013 season.

Kaberle, on the other hand, was a less expected cut. He seemed to be playing well during TC and pre-season, and would provide some quality veteran experience for the Devils blue line. The Czech player also spent the 2013-2014 season playing with the team he signed with in the 2012-2013 lockout interim; should he be unable to find an NHL club, he could easily skate back to HC Klado of the Czech Extraliga. He has played for them during every lockout, and was with them before getting drafted in 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
