Damian Lillard on Oakland A’s loss: ‘I’m used to it’

The Oakland Athletics topped of a late-season collapse Tuesday night by blowing a 7-3 lead in an extra-inning loss to the Kansas City Royals in the AL wild card playoff game. It was a disappointing end to many in Oakland and, for Oakland native Damian Lillard, it was just another heart brake for his home-town team.

According to The Oregonian’s Joe Freeman, Lillard watched the final innings of the A’s game at home after a Portland Trail Blazers practice.

"“I got home and it was 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth” he said. “They scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. And then I started to get nervous.”"

The frustration culminated in a Salvador Perez single that sent in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning. It was a tough loss to swallow, but one that brought on a familiar taste for Lillard.

"“I’m used to it,” he said. “We’ve been doing that for a long time now."

Lillard wears the No. 0 in homage to the places he lived–Oakland, Oregon and Ogdan, Utah. He takes great pride in his Oakland roots, and paid close attention to this baseball season. He told Freeman that he thought the Yoenis Cespedes trade ruined Oakland’s season, claiming it disrupted the chemistry of the team.

Regardless of why it happened, you know Lillard will do what he can to make sure Portland’s season doesn’t end in similar fashion.
