No one needs to remind you that the Jacksonville Jaguars are having a tough 2014 season. The team remains winless, but at least there’s hope on offense with rookie QB Blake Bortles impressing early in his career. The defense, on the other hand, offers little hope, and now remains on pace to break records for futility in several major defensive categories.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Burke writes that the 1981 Baltimore Colts allowed the most points in an NFL season, while the 2012 New Orleans Saints allowed the most yards. The 2014 Jaguars are on pace to break both records.

"At 38 points allowed per game, the Jaguars are on pace to give up 608 points for the season — 75 more than that record-setting Colts team. The 451.25 yards-per-game clip the Jaguars defense is allowing stretches out to 7,220 yards over a 16-game season."

Those are some brutal numbers all around. Even more disconcerting is that most of the damage comes against the Jaguars in the second half. The team has held first half leads against the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers, only to watch the defense get marched all over in the second half.

Things won’t turn around this year for the Jaguars, but the defense can play for pride as they try to avoid making a stain on the NFL record books.
