Although Kobe Bryant recently suggested he could play beyond his 40th birthday, there is going to be a time when the Los Angeles Lakers great does finally hang up the sneakers.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

When that time comes it’s difficult to imagine Kobe completely walking away from the game he loves as it’s something that has been in his blood since youth. Is there a front office role in his future? Perhaps scouting? Maybe just a franchise ambassador? Whatever it is, it won’t be coaching, at least not according to current Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott who says Kobe Bryant is far too competitive to be a coach at the NBA level.

“He’s too tough,” Scott said after the Lakers’ first practice on Tuesday. “He would probably be a whole lot more demanding than Pat Riley, myself and guys like that. It would be tough. Plus, he would expect guys to play like him, to have that type of passion that he has for the game. And to have the love for the game that he has and to have that commitment.

“Guys today just don’t have that like he does. He’s just a dying breed. I don’t think he would bode well if he wanted to coach.”

While that may seem a little silly on the surface, we’ve seen plenty of elite NBA talent attempt their hand at coaching only to fail. While that all can’t be blamed on expectations of their players, there’s certainly some truth to the argument.

The game comes easy for somebody like Kobe Bryant and when it doesn’t come easy for another player, it frustrates him. He’s not alone in that feeling as we’ve seen Michael Jordan and other NBA icons go through similar scenarios.

Perhaps Kobe Bryant will calm down as he ages but you have to believe Byron Scott has a point.
