Sammy Watkins praises Bills QB Kyle Orton
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins isn’t saying that he was unhappy with quarterback E.J. Manuel, but it was implied pretty heavily when he heaped praise on Kyle Orton, the Bills’ replacement for Manuel.

It only took one practice for Watkins to point out some significant differences between the two signal callers.
“We just had a different approach to practice,” Watkins noted. “[Orton] demands what he wants out of us. He’s more of a veteran guy. The way he talked, the way he handles business, the way he looks at plays and breaks down defenses, it’s kind of different than EJ. He reads it quicker, the ball is coming out faster. That’s just some things that we have to adjust to.”
Manuel was benched by the Bills after a particularly tough loss to the Houston Texans in which Manuel threw two interceptions and had a 59.4 rating. Manuel has a 6-8 overall record as the Bills QB, meaning that Doug Flutie is the only Bills QB with a winning record since Jim Kelly.
Perhaps Orton can make the difference with his more mature style. He has a career record of 35-35 as a starting QB, and has shown flashes of competence in both Chicago and Denver. He’s been primarily a backup as of late, but has shown that he can be an adequate game manager in the past.
At the very least, it looks like he’s got the respect of his star wide receiver on the practice field. Only time will tell if that will translate to more wins when there’s an actual opponent on the other side.
