New York Knicks news: J.R. Smith playing point guard in triangle
By Bryan Rose
When the New York Knicks acquired Jose Calderon in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks this past offseason, the assumption is that he’d handle the point guard duties.

That may still prove to be the case though it wasn’t through the first day of practice as J.R. Smith played the lead guard for the Knicks, shocking many who were in attendance. Smith isn’t a complete stranger to the position though isn’t normally thought of as a traditional point guard, however that’s not something of specific need in regards to the triangle.
It could have simply been Derek Fisher attempting to do something different though the triangle offense does tend to favor a taller ‘point guard’. Of course, it has thrived in other situations where a smaller lead guard was used (like Fisher for example) though the New York Knicks don’t have Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal to make life easier as those Lakers did.
In addition to J.R. Smith it’s also been rumored that Iman Shumpert could see time at the point guard position so it seems as if the New York Knicks are exploring the idea of using a bigger body at the one spot under the triangle.
What that means for Jose Calderon at this point is unknown so it should be interesting to see how the New York Knicks training camp shakes out.
