Following an early postseason exit, the Los Angeles Dodgers could fire general manager Ned Colletti, and are reportedly targeting Tampa Bay Rays GM Andrew Friedman to replace Colletti in LA.

Los Angeles Dodgers ownership is disappointed with general manager Ned Colletti, who constructed a roster that looked outgunned by the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS, despite a payroll of approximately $240-million dollars. If Colletti is fired, the Los Angeles Times reports their top target would be the general manager of a team that has won with a shoestring budget — the Tampa Bay Rays’s Andrew Friedman.

Friedman turned around the then-dismal Tampa Bay Devil Rays, becoming the team’s GM after the 2005 season, and helped build a roster that would take Tampa Bay to the 2008 World Series, and the 37-year old has kept the Rays competitive with the smallest of payrolls, often targeting players other organizations aren’t utilizing properly and acquiring them for pennies on the dollar.

The Dodgers payroll is expected to drop to the $185-million range, which is still a sizable increase from any of Friedman’s previous budgets with the Rays. However, no decision has officially been made regarding Colletti’s status, and it’s unclear if Friedman would be interested in changing organizations himself. Colletti has been with the Dodgers for nine years as general manager, though most of his tenure was under the tight-fisted Frank McCourt ownership.
