San Diego State students apparently are going the way of trying to have the “Aztecs” nickname changed

The Washington Redskins and owner Dan Snyder seems to have no interest in changing their nickname which is offensive to the Native American culture, however that doesn’t mean that other teams in sports might not be proactive and go about it themselves. Such as the San Diego State Aztecs of the collegiate ranks, for example.

Well, it’s not the school that is trying to take this measure, rather it’s the students of the institution that believe it is indeed time for a change.

The proposal outlines just why exactly they are going for the change, as if it wasn’t clearly evident to being with.

"WHEREAS, the continued use of the name “Aztec” and the “Aztec Warrior” mascot perpetuate harmfulstereotypes of Native Americans, including the notion that Native Americans are innately violent, dangerous, and “savage” which is demonstrated by the Aztec Warrior’s aggressive body language, theAztec Warrior’s use of a spear at special events, the use of a spear on the SDSU Athletics Logo which isprinted on uniforms and SDSU memorabilia, and the slogan “fear the spear”"

You do have to applaud the efforts of the students in this case, and it will definitely be interesting to see where the school goes from here. How much of this petition will they take into account? Will they end up changing the name? Should they change the name, will students from other schools with Native American mascots follow suit?

There are a lot of things that could potentially come out of this.
