Although the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson have spoken about a contract extension, the two are said to be millions apart on the dollar figure.

Still, that hasn’t stopped Thompson from wanting an extension agreed upon before the October 31st deadline. Will such a move get done though? For now that appears questionable, though it’s rather obvious the young guard wants to get his deal completed as soon as possible.

If he doesn’t, might he opt to wait until 2016 before signing a long-term deal?

"If Thompson wants in on the gold rush on the horizon, he could always sign a one-year deal, then become a restricted free agent in 2016.“It really is tempting to do all that,” Thompson said. “But I’d rather have the security right now, you know?”"

The line of reasoning for Klay Thompson is rather clear. Currently he wants the Golden State Warriors to offer him his contract extension and in exchange he’ll sign for a ‘cheaper’ deal in comparison to 2016 when the salary cap is expected to elevate, in turn raising player salaries.

If he doesn’t sign the contract extension before the deadline it’s very possible he could opt to take a one-year contract (or simply take the qualifying contract he’ll be presented) and play out the 2015 season while becoming an unrestricted free agent for the 2016 offseason.

Obviously that’s something the Golden State Warriors would prefer to avoid as they don’t want to deal with multiple teams with wide open cap space bidding on Klay Thompson, so it may be best for the team to bite the bullet and get the contract signed in the next few weeks.

For now such doesn’t appear immanent though we’ve previously seen contractual negotiations increase at the last minute in effort to complete a deal.
