Robert Griffin III is inching closer to making his return to the lineup for Washington by beginning individual drills in practice this week

Washington may have a growing quarterback controversy on their hands as head coach Jay Gruden ponders making a change with Kirk Cousins sitting on the bench in favor of Colt McCoy, but in the meantime Robert Griffin III is nearing closer to a return to the field.

Griffin has been out since he injured his ankle in the team’s second game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cousins has been the starter the last four games, leading the team to an 0-4 record with eight interceptions and eight touchdowns in those four games.

The good news is that Griffin is expected to begin participating in individual drills this week in practice as he works his way back from his gruesome looking injury after three pass attempts against the Jaguars.

“I think he’s going to start individual drills this week,” Gruden said, via CSNWashington.com. “As far as actually taking practice reps I think that will be at least another week. We’ll get him out there, do some individual drills, throw some balls to balls to the wideouts. That will be the first step. Then next week we’ll try to get him maybe in some practice situations and see where he is.”

Washington has been down this road before with Griffin and his injury history so I’d expect them to take a conservative approach, but they will also have to be cognizant that their season could be slipping away with Cousins turning the ball over at an alarming rate and the success the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East.

If Griffin can get through without any setbacks in individual drills and then participate in full team drills in practice next week, it could be possible that he returns for the Oct. 27 game against the Cowboys.
