Adrian Peterson appeared in court on Tuesday to formally enter a plea of not guilty in his child abuse case.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was expected to enter a not guilty plea in court on Tuesday, which is exactly what he did.

According to Albert Breer, who obtained court documents in Houston, Adrian Peterson has officially entered a plea of not guilty in the case of abusing his child. The evidence has been made public, the trail date will be set and the question now becomes should Peterson have just entered a not guilty plea and put this all behind him?

And so continues the legal plights of Adrian Peterson. You can just see the 30 for 30 documentary being made about this in a few years, and how it all could have been avoided.

Of course, ground zero for all of this was Peterson beating his child, which he admits he may have probably done accidentally. But entering a not guilty plea may be more about pride and ego than anything else.

It’s fairly evident that Peterson beat his child, and he hasn’t done much to help his image since then. Had he entered a guilty plea, he’d have likely been able to work out a deal that saw him avoid jail time, serve out a suspension from the NFL — of which he could argue time served — and then put this behind him.

That’s a brutal way to approach this, but that’s the nature of famous people doing atrocious things. Matthew Broderick killed a girl and her mother back in the 1980s, but no one remembers that. Michael Vick had dogs fight each other to the death and had rape machines for forced canine insemination on his property and he was forgiven.

It’s sick, it’s disgusting but pleading guilty and trying to play his way out of this mess is a tried and proven method Peterson should have taken. It’s not as though you can do something like stand trial for murder, obstruct justice and then redeem yourself by simply playing football and letting time pass by.

Oh wait…
