Mississippi State Bulldogs tight end Malcolm Johnson was named to the John Mackey Midseason Award Watch List.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are having quite a 2014 season, catapulting to the discussion as being the #1 team in the nation to date. Part of that success can be attributed to senior tight end Malcolm Johnson, who was one of 33 tight ends named to the John Mackey midseason watch list.

Johnson was named to the list on the heels of a strong start to the season. He has tallied ten catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns, per the team’s website. He was especially impressive in the team’s upset of Auburn last week when he hauled in a team-leading five receptions for 60 yards.

While the Bulldogs have ascended the rankings primarily on the back of their defense, the offense hasn’t exactly been an afterthought. They lit up Auburn in a 38-23 win that displayed enough dominance to convince USA Today to dub them the No. 1 team in the country.

Johnson’s own awards won’t have much bearing on the team’s hunt for a BCS playoff spot, but it will be interesting to see how he separates himself from a competitive bunch between now and the award’s announcement, which takes place on December 10th.

In the meantime, Johnson and the Bulldogs will have some time off to prepare for a game with the University of Kentucky on October 25th. If the team can keep its winning ways going, they’ll find themselves once more atop the college football landscape.
