You may recall that nearly two months ago, a water main near the UCLA campus burst and flooded everything within its path.
Sadly, famed Pauley Pavilion wasn’t very far from the busted main and the water rushed through the arena, making it look like something out of a movie. Easily ankle deep, the saturation destroyed the beautiful Pavilion court along with creating other damage throughout the arena.
The hope was that crews could clean up and install a new court that would be playable within a month or possibly two, yet the newly-renovated arena is still not playable for practice.
Thankfully that should be changing in the relatively near future though.
"Workers are expected to have completed the cleanup work and installation of a new court in time for the Bruins’ exhibition game against Azusa Pacific on Oct. 31.Coach Steve Alford said Tuesday that hopefully by sometime next week the team will be able to practice in Pauley."
Currently the UCLA men’s basketball team has been practicing in the nearby Student Activities Center though it’s a much smaller court.
In addition to destroying the court (which is used for more than just basketball, mind you) the flood completely destroyed UCLA’s locker rooms, training and weight rooms. This comes after Pauley Pavilion underwent a $136 million dollar upgrade just two years ago.
Everything is expected to be completely ready to go before UCLA opens their home schedule against Montana State on November 14th. Thankfully students won’t need to wear snorkles, wetsuits or flippers to enjoy the much anticipated contest.
