With the game in the books, Browns head coach Mike Pettine admitted that the team at one point considered benching Hoyer in order to get first-round pick Johnny Manziel onto the field.
“It was discussed briefly, but it was a situation where we still wanted to…at least try to end the game with Brian on a positive note,” he said, via Cleveland.com.
But while Cleveland considered benching Hoyer for Manziel, Pettine is trying to assure everyone that Hoyer is still their starting quarterback.
“Brian is still firmly our starter,” said Pettine. “Nothing’s changed. Each week we make the decision as to if we want to include Johnny in the plan.”
If the Cleveland Browns put together another poor performance like they did in Week 7, however, the organization may be left with no choice other than to finally get Johnny Football some significant playing time under center.
